Most people who want fresh, local food face the same wall: not enough land, not enough time, and not enough know-how to grow it themselves.

So they rely on grocery stores, where the distance between field and fork is measured in hundreds of kilometres and where "locally grown" often means something very different than it used to.

Community farming is a different model. Instead of one person doing everything, a group of neighbours shares the work, the knowledge, and most importantly, the harvest. It's been practised in various forms around the world for decades, and in Ottawa it's been quietly growing stronger.

Thunder Gardens was built around exactly this idea.

What is community farming — and why does it matter?

Community farming brings people together on shared or donated land to grow food collectively. Members contribute time and sometimes resources, and in return receive a share of what's grown: real food, grown organically, by people they know.

"When you grow food together, something shifts. You stop being a consumer and start being a participant."

Beyond the vegetables, community farms create something harder to put on a label: connection. Members learn from each other, build skills, and form relationships with the land and with their neighbours. For many, it's the first time they've truly understood where their food actually comes from.

And in a city like Ottawa, where food bank usage has been climbing steadily, community farming also plays a direct role in food access. When growing capacity is shared, surplus food can flow to the people who need it most.

How Thunder Gardens works

Thunder Gardens is a community farm and growing project near Ottawa, launching for the 2026 season. Members grow organic food together on real farmland and share the harvest, no agricultural background required.

  • Grow fresh, organic food on Ottawa-area farmland
  • Share the harvest with fellow members and the wider community
  • Learn practical growing and food skills along the way
  • Connect with a community that values food, land, and people

Who is Thunder Gardens for?

If you've ever wanted to grow your own food but weren't sure where to start or simply didn't have the space — Thunder Gardens is designed for you. Our members come from all walks of life. Some have years of gardening experience. Many have none at all. What they share is a curiosity about food, a desire to connect with something real, and an interest in being part of something bigger than their own backyard.

This is also a meaningful option for Ottawa families looking for an activity that's grounding, educational, and genuinely fun, especially for kids who've never seen a carrot pulled from the ground.

The 2026 season is starting now

This is our inaugural season, which means there's still time to be part of shaping what Thunder Gardens becomes. Early members help define the culture, the rhythms, and the community of the farm itself.

If community, food, and doing something with your hands sounds like your kind of thing — we'd love to have you.

Spots for the 2026 season are limited. Learn more about becoming a Thunder Gardens member and what to expect from your first season on the farm.
