Meet the People (and Paws) Behind Thunder Gardens

Thunder Gardens is not just our farm – it is our home and way of life. Nestled 20 minutes from downtown Ottawa, this land became the heart of something much bigger for our family. What began as a passion for living sustainably and growing organically has evolved into building a vibrant community, centered around food security, learning and being in nature growing amazing, quality food for our family and friends.

Our Story

A Family Farm, with Purpose

Thunder Gardens began as a small hobby farm, but it quickly became our passion. The ability to grow our own food and live sustainably has been a guiding light for us, and over the past five years we have cultivated not only crops, but a deep appreciation for our land and the community it can support. Now we are opening that experience to others, especially people who want to grow their own food and are facing common barriers like space, knowledge, or time. Whatever challenge you are facing, you can do this, and we will help.

Today, everything happens through our community garden model: we grow together, learn together, and share what we harvest. We follow organic and permaculture principles, start strong seedlings in our greenhouse, and grow a diverse mix of plants, shrubs, and trees to build a vibrant ecosystem. We also care deeply about pollinators, and our bee colonies strengthen the farm while providing honey and beeswax, all rooted in a commitment to living in harmony with the earth.

Meet the Team

The Hearts Behind the Farm

Jay

The builder, farmer and heavy lifter of the duo. Jay brings a hands-on, experimental spirit to the farm. He is always ready to try new things… somethings many at once! He is always exploring ways to improve soil health, garden systems, and natural processes. Jay is a natural teacher, who looks forward to sharing everything he has learned with others in the community.

Candace

Co-founder, beekeeper, gardener and list maker of Thunder Gardens. Candace keeps everything running smoothly, ordering more plants, bushes, and trees than Jay ever knows what to do with.  She loves to teach, and brings warmth, and connection into every part of the farm experience.

Tippie

Chief Joy Officer and resident field scout, Tippie is always the first to greet visitors.  She is happiest to run through the fields. She keeps the team grounded, fit and smiling. Tippie also helps to round up the chickens and turkeys if they escape their fences, and chases away any unwanted wildlife.

We’d Love to Hear From You!

Have a question? Want to stop by the farm?  Just feel like saying hello?
We’re always happy to connect with fellow nature lovers, future growers, and curious minds.

Come visit, send us a note, or give us a shout –  Tippie will probably greet you first. 🐾
